About the Position
We are seeking a dependable and organized Sous-Chef to support our restaurant and catering operations. The successful candidate will prepare complete meals and specialty dishes, supervise a kitchen team of 5 to 10 people, and train staff in food preparation, cooking techniques, food handling, and presentation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Estimate the quantities and costs of food items and supplies.
- Maintain records of food costs, consumption, sales, and inventory.
- Requisition food and kitchen supplies.
- Demonstrate new cooking techniques and the use of new kitchen equipment to cooking staff.
- Supervise specialist chefs, chefs, cooks, and other kitchen workers.
- Instruct cooks in food preparation, cooking, garnishing, and presentation.
- Prepare and cook complete meals and specialty foods for daily service, banquets, and other events.
- Train staff in food preparation, cooking, and food handling.
Qualifications and Language Requirements
- Secondary school graduation certificate.
- At least 1 year but less than 2 years of relevant experience.
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certificate.
- English language proficiency.
- Malayalam language skills are an asset.
Culinary Skills and Experience
Candidates should have experience preparing:
- South Indian cuisine.
- Canadian cuisine.
- Vegetarian dishes.
- International cuisine.
- Gluten-free dishes.
Experience should include working with:
- Cereals, grains, and pulses.
- Eggs and dairy products.
- Fish and seafood.
- Meat, poultry, and game.
- Vegetables, fruits, nuts, and mushrooms.
Skills and Personal Qualities
- Strong leadership and the ability to supervise 5 to 10 employees.
- Ability to instruct and train kitchen staff.
- Effective interpersonal skills and excellent oral communication.
- Strong organizational skills.
