Wage:                          $84,377 per annum

 

Vacation:                     62 days – the paid vacation time follows school calendar (September to June) with 2 weeks off for winter break, 1 week for spring break, 5 break days during the year and July-August off

 

Language required:     English, spoken and written

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Team Lead, Centre Based Programs, the Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) has the primary responsibility of providing listening and spoken language intervention services to families and students with hearing loss enrolled in the Early Learning Program and Primary Programs (if applicable) at the Centre. Additional duties include formal and informal assessment, report writing, consultation and collaboration with classroom teachers and support staff, and other tasks as assigned. The SLP will abide by CHSC Code of Ethics and apply best practices as outlined in CHSC policy and by the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC.

 

Direct Intervention:

 

  • Provide ongoing speech and language therapy to children between 3 and 8 years old
  • Collaborate with classroom teams
  • Parent education and coaching
  • Administer annual formal and informal assessments
  • Write assessment reports
  • Collaborate with classroom teams in writing annual reports
  • Develop Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs) and/or Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) in collaboration with classroom teams
  • Participate in the development of care plans when required
  • Maintain robust data collection and intervention information for measuring outcomes for IFSP/IEP goals, writing outcome measures, participating in educational rounds, and tracking various funding models

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • ·         Establish and maintain standards of student behaviour needed to achieve a safe, orderly and productive therapy environment that fosters positive attitudes, and a positive self image
  • ·         Provide an attractive and orderly room environment that reflects the current learning focus of the school
  • ·         Participate in weekly staff meetings and professional development opportunities
  • ·         Prepare for, and participate in case conferences
  • ·         Serve as a resource person for speech and language services as needed throughout CHSC
  • ·         Participate in organizational functions such as fundraisers, open houses, Centre events, etc.
  • Positively represent and be an ambassador for Children’s Hearing and Speech Centre of BC

 

REQUIREMENTS. The successful applicant will possess, at a minimum, the following skills and experience:

 

Education/Experience:

 

  • Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent academic training as required for registration with College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (required)
  • Current or eligible for full registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (required)
  • At least 2 years' experience working with preschool and/or school-age children (required)
  • Experience working with children with hearing loss (Listening and Spoken Language approach) (required)
  • Criminal Record Check (required)
  • Hanen certification (It Takes Two to Talk or More than Words) is strongly preferred

 

Skills and Attributes:

 

•      Ability to collaborate closely with other health and educational professionals (e.g., Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Occupational Therapists, Early Childhood Educators, Audiologist)

•      Ability to work directly with parents and families to support parent education and coaching of language development strategies

•      Strong written and verbal English skills in order to write assessment reports, present findings to families and educational teams, make recommendations to parents and families, refer to external agencies, and write goal plans for students

•      Familiarity with relevant standardized assessment tools (e.g., PLS-5, CELF-P3, CELF-5, GFTA-3)

•      Ability to use and analyze informal assessment measures such as language sampling, clinical observations and play-based assessments

•      Organized and efficient time-management skills to support caseload demands and track various funding models

•      Ability to maintain robust data collection measure outcomes for intervention goals

•      Participating in educational rounds with school-based team

•      Knowledge of best practices in working with children with complex needs and/or additional diagnoses

•      Knowledge of best practices in AAC assessment and implementation (familiarity with Touch Chat, TD Snap, and low-tech AAC are an asset)

•      Familiarity with hearing devices (hearing aids, cochlear implants, BAHAs) and equipment troubleshooting is strongly preferred

•      Understanding of impact of hearing loss on early childhood development and language outcomes is strongly preferred
